Tube Pre-Amp Solid State or Full Solid State with Pedal?

Sign in to disble this ad
Topic.

Is it better to get a solid state head with a tube pre-amp or just get a similair one without tubes and drive it using a good pedal (like the B3K)?

I guess if you don't want to worry about replacing, or breaking tubes go for the pedal option. But I can't really give much more of an answer than that, sorry.

Anthony.

depends on the tone you like I guess. just be aware that if you use a DI before the amp the overdrive from a tube preamp won't go to FOH unless you mic the cab or use the amp's DI set to post send

Good point on the DI/FOH deal; on that note, the sound guy may prefer a dry signal, being one less variable on his plate.
My preference is either all-tube or SS w/pedal; I haven't tried a ton of tube preamps but never liked the ones I have.

If you want a tube sound - then go with tubes. Using a pedal might be an okay alternative, but it will never live up to the tone that tubes have if that's what you're looking for. I'm perfectly fine with using an all SS head, I've never really cared much about the sound of tubes v. solid state, and therefore the added cost of the extra weight and replacement of tubes doesn't seem isn't really worth it to me. If that sound is what turns you on though, I wouldn't bother with compromising with a pedal. Remember, this is YOUR amp and YOUR investment - chances are you'll have this head for at least a few years, you might as well get the one that sounds the way YOU want it to.

Buy an amp because it gets the sound you want. Use a pedal or a bunch of pedals for whatever variety you want.
