Tube recommendations: Ampeg SVT-IIP

What it says.

I've just picked up an early Ampeg SVT-IIP tube preamp. It sounds fine as is with the tubes that came with it, so naturally I want to **ck with it.

At the moment I'm considering a pair of JJ's (one normal, one high gain) and a Tung Sol so I can play around with different tubes in different positions.

What I'm after is a cleanish sound which fattens up, without going into raging distortion, as I turn up the gain.

I'm gonna recommend a 5751 in the first preamp position and new production Tung-Sol in the rest. I have an SVT II and it starts to distort (in a very good way) pretty early on the dial. The 5751 helps to give a little more preamp headroom. Guess it really depends on your power section as I really get the most of my crunch from that area. I play loud
