Tube Switch for Studio Time

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone,
I will be in the studio next week and am getting a bit of overdrive from my all tube SVT. I only notice it on the songs where I dig into the strings harder, but I don't really remember it driving as much as it is now. The Mid and Treble EQs are boosted like hell, so the volume comes up and I guess thats where some of my problem is coming from. Is this just because of the wacky EQ or is this characteristic of an amp that needs a tube switch???

Happy 4th everyone

You are over driving the amp. You can try turning the volume knob down on your bass slightly, turn down on the amp, or don't play as aggressively.

You can swap tubes to get more clean headroom, just as you can swap tubes to make the amp break up easier. I probably wouldn't do it right before I went into the studio unless I knew how the amp was going to act.

No that's the characteristic of your amp. The previous post made suggestions to work with the volume and amount of eq, which is spot on. Also, consider just working with the sound of your amp and maybe combining the amp's sound with a clean DI sound.

Could be overdrive, could need new tubes. My last tube amp did that. It would start overdriving earlier and earlier, I didn't notice it until i would over drive at like 4, when it used to be 7.

Try playing it flat and seeing what it happens, I doubt you'll really be sure for a while or until you swap tubes.

Also, couldn't you just turn down the amp in the studio? It doesn't need to be super loud to record.

Instead of boosting mids and highs so much, maybe just boost them a little bit and cut lows?

+1, especially if you're recording...you don't even want it loud if you want clean.
