I am after more clean headroom in my svt and it has been suggested to me to swap out a 12ax7 and replace it with a 5751 in the preamplifier. Anyone tried this?

Do you mean 5751? If so i do it on almost all my amps because I prefer the way the 5751 breaks up. Having said that, I don't find it increases headroom, it just makes the preamp a bit cleaner and smoother, but no real impact on the poweramp.

+1 .... I find the Phillips/Sylvania work for me, some folks like the Old RCA's if you can find then for a decent price
