Tweaking Bag End S15 XD cabinet

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got Bag End S15XD cabinets and I'm trying to tweak them a little bit.Basically I like the sound except that there is a lack of real lows and a mid bump that I'm not crazy about. Some of that I can fix with the EQ of my amp. Also the tweeter sounds a little harsh to me . I already installed an attenuator to be able to turn down the horn a bit.
That helps a little but I think ti might be more a matter of dispersion than volume.
When i got the cabs, there was the big rectangular piece of plastic with the Bag End logo right in the center of the cabinet. I moved it to the side because I like the look better but now I'm thinking they might have put the logo into the center for a reason.
The highs hit you pretty direct when that cabinet is elevated on a chair or if I stack two of them.So I'm wondering if I could put some kind of disk on the center of the grille so that the highs come out a little softer. Does that make any sense? Has anyone here tried something like that?
Also I wish the cabinet was a little deeper sounding.I don't know anything about speaker design.
The cab has a hole in the center of the rear panel but no tube going in. Can anything be doen to change the bass response of the cabinet?
I have been checking out the Audio Kinesis cabinets and if I had the money I would buy one and probably be happy but these days funds are tight so I'm trying to come up with a solution in the meantime...
Are there any Speaker design experts here who can tell me if anything can be done to tweak these cabs a little?

You can't really tweak the cab. It was designed to sound the way it does, and once you start changing things around it becomes a crap shoot as to what it may sound like and perform.

I've got the same cabs.
The logo is mounted off to the side on mine, so I don't think that has anything to do with sound.
The port on the back is a design that a lot of people don't like. Putting it directly behind the speaker like that loses low end. It's just the way it's made.
You can disconnect the tweeter all together if you don't like it, or if the attenuator doesn't work for you.

The sound you describe that you you don't like (mid bump, lows not super deep) is kinda the BA sound, so I would say you may want to consider selling and finding something you like better.

IME they take EQing very well, in other words you can dial in more bass from the amp and it will still sound natural and cohesive.

They are what they are, namely a very loud cab with rich and detailed mids and a pretty sweet high end. With two stacked the bass is bigger but if you want huge deep lows they are simply not the right cab for you. They are a superb cab for stage monitoring in most cases as they are easy to hear without swamping the stage with huge lows, and this helps you to get a good FOH sound when using a PA.

Though I prefer my Bergantinos for filling a room, these BE cubes are just so easy to carry and fit on a small stage, and have such good monitoring capabilities, they end up being very useful far more often than thought they would, and I'm glad I've kept mine around. They seem to sound equally good with just about any amp as well, SS or tube, and they take distortion very well, making them a very versatile and useful design. Plus they are bulletproof, absolute little tanks without being too heavy.
