tweeter popping

Sign in to disble this ad
the tweeter on my 4x8 cab is popping and it wont stop. the cab dosent have a on/off tweeter switch so thats not an option. the amp im using is a hartke 2000. ive adjusted the eq and everything, but still no luck. ive played it through my 210 with no tweeter and it played with no popping, so im sure its the tweeter on my 4x8.

has anyone had this problem, if so, what did you do????

replaced the tweeter. not totally sure the tweeter is fried, but it's a pretty fair assumption.

Hard to know what is going on (I don't really know what 'popping' means). However, tweeters usually work or don't work (i.e., they blow and then no sound comes out). My best guess is, you have a problem either with your bass or amp that is causing some upper treble range noise/problems. You hear that through the cab with the tweeter, and you don't through the cab without.

So, before you start digging into the cab, make sure to try a different head, bass, and cable(s) to isolate the problem. If it is a 'tweeter' problem, and sound is still coming out, it is more likely the crossover than the tweeter itself.

what is the cab? my money is on an as yet undetermined combination of distortion/amp clipping and a piezo tweeter.

Your problem sounds like one I had. Once I started kicking more power from my amps (a different thread) I kept hearing pops and crackles from my tweeters when turned up very loud. I thought I'd blown them, so I took one apart to see if the diaphram was still intact. It was. So I reinstalled and they still work, for my pusposes right now. I figure when they pop means I'm probably pushing the unit louder (with more power) than they're really designed for. I may ultimately replace the horns with higher rated ones, though.

If there's no crossover inside, you may want to install one.

don't clip it. just disconnect it. but if you do that, also disconnect the woofers from the crossover and plug them up directly to the jack. btw, it often voids the warranty if you do that, so make sure it's not under warranty, or make sure you know how to plug it back up exactly like it was.

Yeah. You'll be best off getting rid of the crossover components, too. That was going to be my advice Not a dumb idea at all.

the woofers are already connrcted to the input jack. the tweeter is the only thing connected to the crossover.
