Two sides of a stereo amp . . .

. . . need they be run at the same load if they're both supported, or does that depend on the architecture of the amp?

Specific amp I'm wondering about is a Peavey DPC1400x. I want to run one side 4 ohm and the other 8 - I suspect both will be run pretty close to wide open. I have the option to run both sides equally hard, or make the 8 ohm side serve pretty light duty.

A stereo amp is two separate amps until you run it in bridged mode. If you are in stereo or parallel mode, output load shouldn't matter as long as you stay within the impedance rating of the amp.
