U5 fried

So I turned on my U5 and got this odd smell and now audio wont pass through it. Not a fuse because it still powers on. probably not unstable power as it's going through a voltage regulator as does everything in my studio. The guy at Avalon thinks the board fried . . .

Bummed - I gotta send this to Avalon in CA, probably gonna co$t a bundle this ever happen to anyone else? This unit has been sitting in my rack working flawlessly for years . . .

Even the best equipment goes wrong and when it does a UPS isn't going to help. I lost a video disk recorder the same way. The power supply fried even though it was powered via an APC UPS. Luckily I had another dead unit with a good power board so changing them out repaired the unit.

Hopefully the repair won't be too hard on your wallet.

I know - I was curious if there was a specific reason w/ this unit. Usually stuff just doesn't happen out of the blue, something causes it. unless it's been building up in some way.

just frustrating really . . .

At least yours worked fine for years, the one I had was dead out of the box and it cost me to send it back to Avalon to get it repaired. They told me the problem was the power transformer was not properly soldered to the circuit board! Avalon should have reimbursed me for the shipping...................

^^ yeah really!

I've had several Avalon products over the years and they've all worked fine though. . . this is the first time I've had to deal w/ the company directly.
