Uh-oh. What happended to my amp?

Gallien Krueger Backline 600.

You know when you turn it on the pilot lamp glows red until it fully powers on and then turns green?

Now it goes straight to green, and the speaker cones flex out and then pop back.

Doesn't seem good.

BTW, its 300 watts @ 4 ohms and I'm using two 8 ohm cabinets.

Dang, I was planning on using this at a gig tonight. I do have backup amps however.

It seems that the soft start feature (allowing the power supply caps to fully charge before powering the output devices) has failed. It shouldn't bother anything, but that popping noise is disconcerting.

Hmmm, soft start. Yeah, my Peavey BAM has that as well. The part that controls that looks like a big dark gray or black ceramic disc capacitor on the Peavey. I don't know if its really a cap or not, but that's what it looks like.

You say it won't hurt anything? Man, I just don't like the look of those speaker cones flexing way out like that. Its just at start up, after that its normal. But I'm leaving it home tonight I guess.

That feature just keeps the amp from receiving a power surge when it's turned on. It won't hurt the amp in the short term but in the long term, it'll start wearing it down until it burns out. Another thing you could do is to get a power conditioner with that same feature. That will do the same thing.

Appreciate the info.

I think I'll try calling Gallien Krueger on Monday. I've dealt with their customer service dept before and they were very friendly and helpful. I used to have a GK Backline 250 that had a broken pot and missing knob. They sent the parts right out to me, no hassle at all, for not much money.

Turn it on, wait a few seconds, THEN connect the speakers.

Not sure how it'd work, but a guitarist buddy of mine turned his Line 6 Spider head in, forgot to connect it to the speaker cab, and when he did he ended up shorting out his power amp.

It'd probably be better to keep the volume at 0 or even your bass unplugged, but I'm not sure where that'd get you.

couldn't you just turn the gain&power knobs to 0 before powering up?

I wouldnt worry about using it before you get it fixed. Most older amps dont even have that feature. I know my old acoustic 370 gives a good pop when turning it on and it has never hurt my speakers after years of use.

Plug everything in normally, turn the all the volume/gain knobs down to zero, turn the amp on, wait a 5 seconds, turn the volume/gain up to normal and you should be good.

Whatever you do, don't do this.

My 370 does the same thing. I've never had a problem with the speakers. It's been doing this since I bought it used in 1981.

Cheers,
Jim
