Undecided: GK MB500, Ampeg PF500, or Aguilar Tone Hammer 500...

I am losing sleep here now trying to decide which new head.
Now that I heard clips with the Tone Hammer 500, it has entered the race.

The only one I was able to try was the Ampeg. I just know that the Mark Bass LMIII is not doing it for me....known for a while.

Just need to be put in the right direction....HELP!

I play Jazz and P Bass, and play mostly top 40, Motown and Classic Rock.

Can't go wrong with the Ampeg. But this is a bit like picking out a wife for you...I may love her and you may hate her. In the end, what really matters is how you play, but I'm very impressed by the PF500.

The ToneHammer continues to blow me away with tone, volume and versatility. I owned the PF500 and found it underpowered. The tone was nice, but I sold it after one day.

The ToneHammer 500 is pretty sick. You can get a pretty decent ampeg type tone out of it too with the drive knob. Very versatile, I love mine.

I think in today's market for micro-heads they are all pretty much at a level that the reliability factor is nil. It just comes down to what features they offer, your budget, and what tone you are going for.

I will say I'm happy with my Ampeg PF500 & for $399 it's at an amazing price point. Are there better micro-heads? That's subjective on your needs.

I have a TC RH450 and it is the ****, great tone, 3 pre sets, compressor and the price has plummeted since the 750 came out.

Believe me, I even thought of the Shuttle 6.0, but it sounds to fake so to speak, not natural. It looks great and looks to be built well, but I do not think I would be 100% happy...I like the sound of the Streamliner 600, but $849 is a little out of my league, right now.

I do like the Ampeg ease of getting good tone, but I have also owned 3 different GK heads over the span of 18yrs of playing Bass...

Any other thoughts?

Love mine!

The audio on this is just from the built-in mic on the camcorder but it still sounds decent.

Ignore my flub at the end! I got a bit distracted, at that time!

It's funny...Ampeg's been proven to be one of the most reliable companies out there with their specs, and they still get their balls busted for their amps being "underpowered." I don't get it.

I'll chime in on the gkmb500. I like the features, power and its lightweight. Is it a zillion times better than other micros? Probably not, but its pretty good.

I agree with Jimmy here...I tried the PF500 and it definately had volume...some people are afraid to turn that gain button past 11:00 or noon

Both are nice heads, probably in my opinion the mb500 has too much boost, tone hammer i think is more well balanced.
Cheers. Enrico

It’s definitely the GAIN stages. On my Carvin/GK/Behringer, I set the GAIN usually around 11:00 and the MASTER on 12:00.
Too get the same volume out of the AMPEG, the GAIN is set around 1:00 with the MASTER at 12:00.
I believe it’s an “Ampeg sound” thing were “the tone” occurs at higher GAIN levels.

Kind of like some well known guitar amps that are a staple. With the gain past noon, you get more volume and grit without the farting out of the head-cab.

I am leaning more twds the Ampeg PF500.

Sounds pretty good for a camcorder! What cab(s) are you using?
