| Ya know Jim, the older I get, the harder it becomes to accurately compare subtle sonic properties of cabs and amps. I only play a couple of times a month these days but it generally comes down to this.
Is it loud and full enough to cleanly cut the gig?
Does it do this without compressing itself? and;
Can I hear the tonal range of my bass well?
Like you, I don't require a super high end, but I do want to hear the snap when I (occasionally) pop the "G" string. I also play R&B and classic rock style music.
One of my very favorite cabs is a Goliath III, which I've used since 2005. Does everything I need tonally and can handle plenty of power, putting out lots of SPL. Only thing is, it weighs 90+ lbs. and I can no longer schlep it around due to deteriorating health conditions. Luckily, my main band has a roadie (sometimes two), and I can leave it in the band trailer between gigs, knowing it will be set up and waiting for me at the venue. When I have a gig with another band, I have to bring something else from my house, so last week, I dusted off my Carvin LS 1503 which hasn't seen any real duty lately due to some crossover problems I had in 2008.
This cab is one of the inspirations for greenboy's fEarful 15+6 which I would have gotten built in a heartbeat if cash was a little looser. It handled the club gig last week as well as my G III but in a larger venue, the Goliath would have been able to hold up to a little more volume.
From what I've read here, the Golight sounds great to the owners who have reviewed them. I know it's using Kappalites rather than the heavy PAS drivers of my G III, but I'd probably give it a whirl if I didn't need to drastically reduce weight. As I said before, a fEarful 15/6 would be my cab of choice though.
