Upgrade and a question....

Sign in to disble this ad
Back in 1990/1991 (can't remember exactly), I picked up a Peavey Mark III (300 CHS) 150 watt head, along with a Peavey 410B cabinet...Been a great rig, and still use it...Then about 10 years ago I found a Peavey 1810 cabinet (for some reason I thought it was an 1820, but just checked it out a couple minutes ago), and added that to the mix...I started out by running a speaker cable from each output on the head to each input on each cabinet....Then the amp would get too hot and shut itself down...Then after cooling off a bit be OK..So I started runing the cables differently (into the 410, then out the 410 and into the 1810), and bought a little clamp-on fan to blow onto the heat sink on the back of the head...No more overheating problems, and never shut down since that...

Well today I finally scored a Peavey Mark VI XP Series off ebay ...This head should be the last one I'll ever need, with 250 watts @4 ohms, and 400 watts @ 2 ohms...

Now to the wiring question...I'm assuming that the way I was running the cables at first on the Mark III was the reson for overheating the head...I know the 1810 is rated for 200 watts, and is a 4 ohm cabinet...Did some research and found that the 410B is rated for 350 watts, and is also a 4 ohm cabinet....

Now I also have a Randall RW410 cabinet that was given to me, but I can't find out anything about how much power it can handle....But it does say it's a 4 ohm cabinet on the input mounting plate...

Now here's my options on running the cables...
1-Run one out the head, and into the Peavey 410, and one out the head and into the 1810 full range input...

2-Run one out the head and into the peavey 410, then out that cabinet into the high (2-10's) input on the 1810...Then another out the head and into the low (18") input on the 1810..

3-Use both 410 cabinets and run one out each output ion the head and into each cabinet...

I'm not an electronics wizard, and have limited knowledge of how to wire up speakers ands keep from frying the amp...So I'm asking the smarter than me guys out there for some help...

Thanks guys...

Actually, both methods of hooking up the spkrs, (both straight from the head, or daisy chained from one to the next), is EXACTLY the same thing. Most probably, the cure was the fan. Since the new head is rated to 2 ohms, running both cabs should not cause the amp to overheat at all, no matter how you connect the spkrs.
