Upgrading speaker in combo amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently picked up an Acoustic B20 practice amp. It's only 20W, but it sounds pretty darn good to my ears for a practice amp. I can get most of the tones out of it that I want to and it can generate a pretty low rumble for this little wattage.

Given that the amp and the cabinet seem to be tweaked pretty well to get a good sound for the money, I wouldn't mind dropping a decent quality speaker in it. It comes with a 12" 6 ohm speaker, but I'd like to put a heavy duty speaker with a center cone in it.

Does anyone have any suggested replacement speakers that they like?

If you like the sound of it now, I'd suggest you don't change the speaker. The speaker and cabinet volume have been carefully selected to compliment each other and the impeadance (6 Ohms) has been selected to match the amps maximum output. I'm guessing it doesn't have a ext. speaker out on the back.

Most replacement speakers will be either 8 or 4 ohms. Neither of these is a perfect replacement.

I very much doubt that a lot of care was taken matching the driver and cab in a 20w combo. OTOH getting any significant improvement would require a well engineered driver/cab combination, and probably wouldn't be worth the effort, not to mention the cost.

Eminence 3012HO? (if you can get one) but with 20W it will be idling. Probably overkill! A Deltalite 12 is slightly lighter and should also be sensitive.

You need fairly high sensitivity to get any sound out of 20W. Go for a sensitivity rating of 99 dB/W minimum.

Use Win ISD or something similar to put in the speaker parameters and check the existing box volume would be suitable before spending money. Otherwise you could take out the amplifier section and build a whole new box for your new speaker.
