Upgrading an SVT 3 PRO with new power section

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all!! I've been reading about all the fantastic micro amps with the SMPS power sections, and I started thinking about possibly putting one of those power amps into my 3 pro. I'm not sure if anyone has done this sort of thing before, or if it would be ultimately worth it. As I already have one of the older USA made ones and the preamp is fantastic. A new power section would probably also decrease the weight of the amp. Am I being delusional, or could this be a pretty good idea?! Thx for your input!!

SMPS is short for Switch Mode Power Supply. It supplies the power required by the amp. If you are talking "micro" amps you probably mean a Class D output stage. The work involved and associated costs would far outweigh potential benefits like lighter weight.

What Paul said. I've looked into it- I'd like to build an amp using the pre of my choice, and SMPS amp, myself. What I've found is they're tough to get hold of unless you're an OEM. And, the power supply and amp sections are generally sold separately. Best bet would be to buy a used head, such as a Markbass or similar and use it's guts(IF they'll fit in your chassis). But now you're chasing schematics, cutting up circuit boards, hoping signal levels are matched up OK, noise problems, the whole shebang. Big project, probably not worth the effort and time.

I sent a message to Mike @ Putnam and I'm waiting to see what he tells me, I will update for you guys later. They can put the small amps in the VT bass rack mod, I don't see why he wouldn't be able to pop one in the Ampeg and make it a 1000 @4 ohm monster. I imagine the little amps cost a lot though...

I'm less concerned with weight as with power.

Sure, but he's already figured out how to do that. He'll have his work cut out for him to figure out the Ampeg pre and it's associated circuits, and make it work with the amp he uses. But hey, if he'll do it- great- let us know.

naturlich... it is possible.

But you give up the tube-driven power amp......

Maybe it would be better if done to a 4 PRO. I have a nice little SMPS to handle all the preamp stuff...... courtesy of the 8PRO and the nice folks at Power Integrations.

That's what I'm asking, is it possible? Is the tube driven power amp messed up if you do this?! I love my 3 Pro, but I've been GASsing for a gb shuttle, or perhaps a carvin b2000. But if I could pimp out the 3 Pro, that would be pretty cool too!!

You might want to try the preamp out of a 3-Pro into a standard power amp before you get too involved.
I thought the pre-amp out was OK but not nearly as nice as a standard SVP pre-amp into a power amp

is it possible? Sure..... if you wanted to, but is the game worth the candle?

An SMPS could fit in the space occupied by the transformer and PS portion of the existing power amp. I feel certain that a class-D amp would fit nicely in the space of the existing one, as I have personally fitted a 2500W amp into less space.....

But it probably is not worth the effort.... there are amps that would be pretty close if not the same as what you want.

Isn't the 7pro basically the same thing as the 3pro with a class d power section? Sounds like just what you're looking for right?

No, the 7 pro has a 1 tube preamp, and the 3 pro has Preamp: Tubes (3 x 12AX7)
Driver Tubes: 1 x 12AX7, 1 x 12AU7. So if you could replace the power system, you could make an insane amp.

+1 Get something like a Crown XLS1500 (1500 watts and less than 10 lbs.)
and connect to your SVT-3 PRO preamp output. You'll get 1500 watts
with SVT-3 PRO tone. And you'll avoid juking up your SVT-3 PRO.

I have a carvin dcm 2000 and have used it like that. I would just like to not carry both amps together, and still get 1000 + watts

I think the SVP preamp is your best best.

Add a Peavey IPR power amp and you'll have a killer lightweight rig.
