Use for an amp head

Sign in to disble this ad
I am wanting to get a larger amp soon but I am still slightly unsure about the true use of an amp head. The true purpose is just as an eq right? I have a Boss GT-6B pedal with full eq controls on it so I can obtain many different tones just with the pedal itself. Is the head really necessary since I have this? Shouldn't I be able just to run straight from my pedal to the amp without having to worry about buying a head? I know this might sound kinda dumb but I am not a wiz when it comes to this kind of stuff because I am still new to it.

many guys do this Pre-amp > Power-amp > Speaker cab, it's pretty tried and true, lots of amps out there too. The drivecores seem really popular right now, I'm thinking about going this route too, GK RB700mkII just not enough watts for me. plus you get advantage of having YOUR sound go to FOH with out-board PRE.

I looking around $400-500, I am trying to find out if I need an amp head though. I tested a GK MB115 200W and I liked the sound, but I'm thinking the 410MBX would have more oomph behind it.

Ok, after some brief thinking I think you helped answer my question. Thanks.

cool, glad to help. I myself (if I go thru with it) will build a pedal board with just a few effects and a sansamp BDDI, which would act like your boss. providing all the PRE-AMP I need to get a good sound, then buy a power-amp like a crown or behringer in a separate road case to drive the cabinet(s). This way if I play a gig and don't have my particular Power-amp/cabinet setup I'm at least using my pedal board/Pre-amp with all my own settings *bonus The soundguy gets "My sound" and sends it thru the house P.A. straight from my pedalboard. So no you don't need an AMP-HEAD, if you don't want one, it would be redundant to run your boss into an amps front end anyway.
