Using a combo amp as a spekaer only?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Nemesis RS410 combo and I would like to be able to use the speaker component only without removing the built in head. Can it be done? Is there anything I need to be aware of? I want to be able to use a separate head from time to time.

Yes, just add a 1/4" input from the speakers.

These units are 4ohm and have an external jack wired in series. Would it be possible to ust this output as input for the new head?
Also, if I just solder in a new output jack, will I risk damage to the internal amp even when it is switched off?

To safely use the internal speaker(s) of a combo amp with an external amp, the speaker must be disconnected from the combo's internal amp. If you don't, you risk damage to the external amp, since it will be driving the combo's internal amplifier which will present a very low impedance load -- probably well below 1 ohm. Not a good thing.

Thanks robgrow, that does make sense. Since the external amp is a tube monster, I will need to devise a wiring scheme which will disconnect the internal amp when the speaker cable from the external amp is plugged in as I would like to be able to use both formats. Combo for rehearsal and tubey for shows.

Just treat the internal amp and speaker as separate components.

My combo has 2xjack sockets on the back of the amp, with a jack going into one of them from the internal speaker (other socket is for external cab).

Just make them completely separate but in the same box if you get what i mean.

But even with the internal amp switched off, will not the external amp "see" it in the load as Robrew says?
