Using one cab with a tweeter and one without?

Sign in to disble this ad
If using one cab as "full range" and one as a subwoofer, wouldn't the highs still go to the sub, making it not work as a cab for only the low frequencies as they are marketed?

Is there no internal low-pass filter in the sub? There probably is one in the "full range" cab, allowing lows to the woofer and highs to the tweeter.

We need a bit more information.

I'm saying generally: eg Barefaced Big One paired with Big Sub, Acme Low B2 and B2W etc. I think you're right about the low pass thing in the woofer, I didn't know they were passive though. I'm only talking about pairing two cabs.

I suggest asking the builders for specific info on the topic.

Correct, unless low pass filtering is used with the sub. In the PA genre low passing is SOP. In the electric bass genre it's somewhat more rare than hen's teeth.

I think OP is talking about two otherwise identical cabs, one with a horn and one without?

That being the case it'll work fine, probably better than both with horns once you get out into the audience... on account of that pesky integration of high frequencies of which little is spoken.

Manufacturers should offer cabs in lefty and righty so you can stack one on top of the other with the horns adjacent vertically.

Tweeterless bass cabs are still full range, since they reproduce all frequencies between 40hz (or around that) up to 3Khz.

Bass cabs with tweeters are also full range, but the range is wider, starting at the same 40hz or so and going up to something around 14-16khz.

I've never seen a bass cab marketed as a cab for only the low frequencies...

Marketed - you mean as in trusting the sales and marketing team ? Danger Will Robinson!

I doubt this is truly relevant but I'm of hte impression that 1 tweeter per rig is sufficient for my needs so in my rig I built a 12 sub to go along with a 12.6 cab.

When I ran a pair of Avatar cab's, I disconnected the tweet on the lower cab.

There have been a few companies, Bergantino and Aguillar come to mind that offered tweetered and non-tweetered versions of some cab's.

There isn't a heck of a lot of signal up high and while running the non-tweetered woofer full range appears 'sloppy' from an engineering standpoint, in reality anything that high up reproduced by the woofer, is going to be buried by the much more efficient tweeter anyway ...

The Big One has indeed been replaced by the Big Baby and Big Twin! And the Baby Sub (designed to go under the Big Baby) has a lowpass filter so it only reproduces lower frequencies. The midrange driver on the Big Baby has a switchable L-pad which you bypass to maintain accurate response when using a Big Baby + Baby Sub stack.

Neither cab has a tweeter as standard although one is optional on the Big Baby (i.e. the Big Baby T).

I was sure I was going to order a Big One (or two!), but I can live with the Big Twin.

Many bass cabs with tweeters just use a blocking cap on the tweeter to keep the lows out of them and send full range to the cones.
