Are there any real tonal differences between the V4 and the V4B?

Yes the tone controls. But a V4 can sound just like a V4-B for most uses.

they are almost exactly the same amp. the v4 has a lo switch (which almost no one ever uses) the mid eq points are the same, and the v4 has input sensitivity switches, the v4b doesn't. for more info, take alook at this page:

here's a pic of 3 of mine (two V4's and a V4B):

Is this the same head that is in the VT-22 Combo?

The link that John K sent you answers that question, but, basically, this is the head separated from the speaker. In other words, The vt22 is the combo version of the V4 (amp only).

BTW, John really knows his ****.

if i were to get another v4, it would have to be a v4b. i want a special designation for bass that makes me feel like i'm somebody.

john knows his ampegs. what he says goes.

V4's say VT22 and V4 on the back of them (because they're the same amp in different cabinets).
here's the back of my VT-22 (look above 'the ampeg company'):

V4B with 7027's = the best bass amp I've ever played through
Bought one is the mid 70's and rarely gig it (not enough power) but will never sell it

Same here! I have a early 70's V4. It sounds great for in the studio or for very small gigs. For normal gigs I use my 70's SVT.
