So I'm borrowing a friend's vintage Ampeg V2. This amp really suprised me with the amount of balls it has. The newer Ampeg stuff, I find I have to turn the bass up on it to get as much low end as I'd like. With the V2 the low end was fine with the volume and bass at noon, and I was playing through my guitar cab! (Earcandy 2x12", ported, Eminence Vintage 30 and Greenback copies). I've gigged on a V4, but with the V2 I could get some distortion rocking, a real wonderful sounding distortion at that, and still have plenty of volume.
If anyone is interested I could do some soundclips to show the kind of distortion this thing does. I'll be doing some recording in the coming days anyways so I could probably slip that in at some point.
Anyone else like using a V2 on bass? |

Sidenote-if the situation ever arises, you're more than welcome to give my '73 OR120 a test. |

| | | I have a V2. Basically half of a V4, but with more plate voltage for a bit different sound. The tone stack is active - noon is flat. Great guitar amp. Underpowered for bass unless you have monster cabs (it'll handle 2 ohms), are recording, or doing a very quiet gig.

I use this one every now & again when I use the stereo outputs on the Ric.

And i'll like it more once it stops blowing plate resistors.

IME for those occasions where you don't need more wattage, it sure is nice not to have to carry it!
My Sunn 200s currently fits that bill quite nicely. But if I had the chance to get that in Ampeg flavor, it would be pretty hard to pass up!

That is indeed a super clean V2 though.

I was commenting on Destructobot's V2. It looks cherry, mine has a few scratches and the obligatory "cigarette" burn on top, but is in original condition. It's a Magnavox era amp.
That's my Sunn 6-10 Concert Lead cabinet you see there. A guitar cab, 6 ohms.

There's some extra noise and clipping going that might just be my computer, I don't know. At any rate, the distortion I'm hearing in the room is just the musical stuff. And I've got my bass wah which I kick on here and there. Wilson Effects Mark Olson custom bass wah, check it out. |

If I had a cab that could comfortably handle it/a band that needed it/no neighbors, I would dime my Buster all the time. |

For the record I'm running the amp with all of the knobs at noon, except the reverb which is set more around 9 o'clock. I am using some reverb. |

| | | | Yeah mine is like a museum piece, I have no idea how it managed to stay this untouched for 30+ years. Got it from a guy on TGP a couple years ago.
