Vintage American Tubes! Mountains! And finally, and Ampeg.

Sign in to disble this ad
Now that i have lured every one in, I've never really WANTED an Ampeg, but this was too good to pass up. Always liked british amps more, but hey, i could NOT pass this baby up!

1970 something Ampeg V4, with all American made Tubes in it. RCA + Magnavox 7027's, Magnavox Pre amp tubes, and so on. Looks like only one 7027 is bad...

Works, just needs a new power quartet, screen, and plate resistors. Stuff that would of been a turn off to somebody who would have to pay to get it fixed... but not me!

I'm also missing the back plate...

I better not post a price on how much i paid...
Even though my father felt i could do better... by the time the pawn owner said the price, i was drooling like a dog.

Curious, why does it not have any grill logo holes in the cover? re covered, maybe?

Black tape is un-original, i presume as well?

And, can anybody tell me the year on this bad boy?

Its magnavox era, but i'm not sure when... sales man said 1972, but i took that with a grain of salt.

Okay, fine.... it was a dollar per watt.

More than happy to post pictures of whatever is needed to help pin down a year.

Pictures!
On fliptops.com, they said that until the mid 70's, V4's didn't have the AMPEG logo on the front, right?

732306.... mean anything?

Not actually connected... just being held in place by a wire for later use.. or something?

It used to have blue lines... but now black tape... right?

Grungy....

Enjoy.

Ought to be enough pictures for anybody.

Aren't 7027s hard to come by? I have no worries, my amp uses EL34s. I wish we had vintage Ampegs in pawn shops around here.

tell your dad that i said there is no way you could do better than $100! fantastic score even with the wonky plate tape and bad tubes.

that particular v4 had black lines. and yes, i do believe that transformer code indicates a 73, which would make it a magnavox made in linden, nj. and no ampeg logo on the front.

btw, if the black tape look irks you, you can get a replacement plate from fliptops for $65:

you da man!

No. JJ, sovtek, and EH have all reissued them.

That would be an early 70s model, probably very early considering it still had the part numbers stamped on the metal for the power cord and doesn't have holes drilled for a logo (mine didn't have either and it was dated to 73/74 IIRC).

Anyways, the faceplate should look like this:

I think fliptops sells a replacement.

And as far as the 732306- I'm not sure what it is. I can't remember if my V4 had numbers stamped on it like that, but it was a magnavox model, not a linden NJ model (you should have a tag on the back if it's still there which says either linden or "division of magnavox" which will help you tell the year). Maybe the code are part numbers? My SVT has a similar number (amp is in the shop, can't say what the number is) stamped on the cord holds, chasis, and several other parts with different ending numbers after the dash.

Thanks Jimmy!

Like i said, the man said $100, and i said SOLD. after a quick ATM trip, for some monies, i practically ran out of the store with that amp... all 70 pounds or so of it.

Yep, already says MAGNAVOX corp on the back, so i knew that much. Either way... i've already had offers, but this is a Keeper!

In all honesty, i'll just make a new back panel for it.

Tesla tubes are good for 7027's, right? Most of the pre amp tubes seem good to me.

Coreyfyfe, mine says "THE AMPEG COMPANY - A DIVISION OF THE MAGNAVOX COMPANY".

It has a box for a serial number, but nothing is present there.

Hang on.. this is a two channel amp?

Also, what to the "Extension amp" sockets do in the back, anybody?

if you look at the potentiometer or capacitor date codes you'll know pretty much exactly when it was made. it looks like anywhere from '71-'73 to me.

Two channels with independent volumes but the same EQ. The ext amp jack can be plugged into a mixing console for FOH/recording or into the input (or ext amp jack) of another amp for added volume. Not sure if it's line level (ie if it could go directly into a power amp).

Mine was div of magnavox as well, but IIRC there was a transition period between the end of NJ production and start of IN production. Either way, it's likely somewhere between 71 and 74.

Thanks! I'll pull some pots when i clean it up.

EDIT: Nevermind. I figured as much because it was 10k ohms - which isn't too much more than say, a guitar pickup.
