Vintage Bassman head or Sunn 300t

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I'm in the process of renovating my rig and have pretty much decided that the SWR Redhead doesn't deliver the tone or power that I want from an amp. With my recent acquistion of a Sunn 215 enclosure, I want to get an all-tube bass head that can really make the best use of the 15's.

I'm currently looking at an early 70's silverface Bassman head. I've heard these played many times, and have played one myself a few times and I rather enjoy the tone. However, I've read a lot on the Sunn 300t and have listened to many demonstrations of the head (not to mention my favorite bassist, Dan Briggs, uses a 300t exclusively). The problem is, I can't find a 300t for sale anywhere. Does anybody know where I can find a Sunn 300t? And would it be better than the vintage Bassman? Oh, the indecision.

Just get the best of both worlds and get a Fender Bassman 300

Yeah, the 70s bassman will work for practice and for small shows, and to do a certain sound. But the 300T, well........that thing's a beast. I use a Bassman 300pro, which is the exact same as the Sunn 300T, and let me say, they are incredible amplifiers. You will never need to be louder than what that can provide you with. I run mine through a Sunn 2000s 2x15 cab, JBL K140 loaded, and I can get to about 4 on ch1 vol and 4 on master before it starts to hurt.....physically. Stuff falls off walls. They're epically loud, and can get you prety much anything you want aurally. HUGE bass, raunchy mids, biting treble. The 70s Bassman is cute, the 300T is BURLY.

As far as finding one, look on the evilbay for both the Sunn 300T and the Fender Bassman 300pro. Like I said, same amp. Check out Jaxed.com too.
