Volume difference on poweramp channels

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I recently noticed running both sides of Crown XLS402 from an Aguilar db659 that one channel was lower in level. On further investigation it looks like one connector from the preamp is balanced jack to xlr, one is unbalanced. Why the difference in volume? I believe that the jack outputs on the db659 are unbalanced, is it incorrect to use a balanced jack (which gives a lower level)?

Thanks for any input you can give

Jon

most likely, one is for using active basses, so it's padded down from the normal input. i never bother with those active inputs even when using an active bass...but i guess i'm weird because every damn amp has them nowadays.

Thanks Jimmy, but i'm talking about the output jacks on the back of the db659, the front panel inputs are labelled active and passive. Using an unbalanced on either output swapping into one input on the Crown gives the same level - i'm wondering whether it should be ran with a trs - xlr or ts-xlr connector as they give different levels (ts being hotter)

Hi Jon.

Without knowing or measuring the output levels on the different outputs it's impossible to tell why there's a difference.

Generally, the balanced and unbalanced outs (& ins) should be about equal in signal strenght (or sensitivity).

When connecting pre- and power amps, consoles etc., balanced is always the best way to do it.

Regards
Sam
