volume fade

ive had my volume fade a couple of times in my rack. i was just wondering from a technical standpoint what could cause volume to fade, not cut out completely, but fade. i havent been able to isolate exactly what piece of gear it happens in since its only happened twice, but i know between what pieces of gear its happening, so it could be an ampeg svp bsp preamp, carvin fx2, nady eq, or an alesis compressor. im sort of excluding a cable problem because its a volume fade, not a cutout, but i could be wrong. thanks in advance!

i guess this might have fit better in effects forum so move it if need be, sorry

Could be a component in any one of those devices starting to fail. You'll have to test each of them individually to narrow it down.

are you talking testing by playing and see what happens, or something i can actually test in some way? im not too knowledgeable when it comes to the inner workings of this stuff.

By playing. Strip the chain down to the minimum, first with just the BSP. Spend time playing just through that, and see what happens. If there's no fade, then add back ONE of the other rack units, and spend time playing. Do this with each unit one at a time. Ideally the fade will happen and that way you'll know where the problem is. If the fade doesn't happen with any of them, then swap in your patch cords, one by one. Be sure to play at whatever volume the fades happened before, in case that had something to do with it.
