Walkabout Head Question

Sign in to disble this ad
This has probably been asked and answered 100 times but...

The walkabout head is 300 watts @ 4 ohms and 165 @ 8 ohms.
The back of the amp is confusing in that, centered on top of the speaker outs it says 4 ohms, and below them under each speaker out it says 8 ohms (at least the one I looked at today at GC did).

I looked at the manual and it says nothing about how the outs are wired. Are the outs series/parallel yielding a 4 ohm load with 2 8 ohm cabinets?

No worries. You can connect you cabs any way you like, as long as the total impedance is 4 Ohms or more (typically 2 8 Ohm cabs or a single 4). As an aside, however, many have and continue to run their Walkabouts at less than 4 Ohms without trouble, although mesa does not recommend this.

I guess my question is do you get the full 300 watts with 2 8 ohms cabs using the 2 outputs from the amp.

You can either use the two outs on the head or "daisy chain" two 8 ohm cabs. Parallel is standard assumption in these cases. If the outputs are in series, it will almost always be noted.

Yes- using 2 8 ohm cabs- one outta each 'spkr out' you WILL get the 300watts. Tho I very often run mine at either 2.67 ohms = around 450w & 2 ohms = apparently 550w
I DO know for sure It gets LOUD! Oh & sounds GREAT!

Is there any advantage to either?

Not really. You'll wind up with an overall 4 ohm load using two 8ohm cabs in parallel regardless of how you hook them up. I usually run both off the head when I am in this situation. That's just my habit though.

+1 it makes NO difference. Either way, same results.

...or you can use a single 4Ω cab too.

BTW....the reason I am asking this is because I love the tone from the WA head. 300 watts should be plenty for all of my work. I have used a '72 V4B with 8x10's in the past and that more than covered the biggest outdoor stage. I was wondering how much range, from coffee house jazz gig to classic rock on an outdoor stage, the head would cover. I have switched to the bergs and it sounds like the WA Head will meet my needs. The tone is FAT!
