Walkabout sound and portability but more power?

Sign in to disble this ad
Looking for suggestions for an alternative to my walkabout head but with more power. I like the tone and the lightweight but need something to use for bigger gigs. Obviously something in the ballpark tonewise would do...not expecting the exact same tone.

Perhaps the new Genz Benz Streamliner 900 (watts). There's a big thread on it if you haven't already seen it.

RH450 can apparently get close. There is a thread with soundclips around somewhere.

Depends what tone you were digging from your Walkabout. There are 31 flavors in there. I found the BB750 does the clean/barely overdriven WA tone well, but it's expensive, heavy and lacks the WA eq.

i never use the EQ in the Walkabout. the DI is a big plus for me. i like it set barely overdriven or clean. i'll check into the BB750.

can anybody vouch for the headroom in the RH450? just curious if it's a loud 450W or not.

I don't really hear much of the Walkabout in the RH450, but I can surely vouch for the headroom... it is a LOUD 450 watts, due to the limiter design (similar to Genz, a kind of 'tube amp' emulation thing that allows the power amp to exceed its rated power by allowing it the THD to increase, etc. like a tube amp).

I'm almost positive it'd be worthwhile to try the WAB with a nice power amp.

I'd always suggest a bigger cab for bigger gig. The walkabout drove my Aguilar S810 or GS412 just fine. More surface area of speakers > more watts in most cases. I've never needed anything more than an 8x10 or 4x12. And if I did, i was provided sound reinforcement.

I have been an avid user of a Walkabout and the TC Electronic Classic 450. I can vouch that the headroom on the TC heads is great and my Classic 450 can get stupid loud with the right amount of cone surface. I can get similar sounds from the two heads...they are not world apart and I would say are in similar tone veins, but the Classic 450 won me over in the end and I sold my Walkabout. Now I use the Classic 450 exclusively.

Just get a bigger, multi driver cab for your walkabout head.
Or two bigger cabs

Some of the mojo of the walkabout comes from the tube that drives the mosfet section.
Walkabout+poweramp is not the same.
