Warehouse Speakers

I performed search for these speakers and found four threads. None definitively answered the question. Do TBers like these speakers? I guess I'm asking as compared to others speakers. I am not an expert on speakers but many of you are and I value your input. I replaced my SWR Son of Bertha with one and It sounds good. It was also dirt cheap, I paid $90.00 on sale. Thanks for your input.

I've never used them before. But . . .

. . . The important thing is to check out the T/S parameters to see how well the speaker will perform for your application.

From the link:

Thiele-Small Parameters

* Resonant Frequency (Fs): 34 Hz
* Impedance (Re): 6.1 ohm
* Electromagnetic Q (Qes): 0.38
* Mechanical Q (Qms): 3.76
* Total Q (Qts): 0.36
* Compliance Equivalent Volume (VAS): 11.48 Ft^3
* Surface Area of Cone (Sd): 132.7 In^2
* Bl Product (TM): 20.3 TM
* Voice Coil Size: 2.5”
* Sensitivity 1W/1M (SPL): 99 dB
* Nominal Impedance: 8 ohms
* Xmax: 7.5 mm
* Frequency Response approx 20 - 4500 hz

Running these numbers through a program like WinISD will move you in the right direction.

For $90 it may be OK. But with no SPL chart to see what is does above 200 Hz, which is as high as T/S specs are accurate to, it's still an unknown quantity. For $169 I wouldn't consider it at all.

The fs and xmax looks more like a subwoofer but then claiming the same speaker can reach 4500hz and have SPL of 99 doesn't add up. I also don't remember seeing a speaker that publishes a response of 20hz, that's the absolute bottom of human hearing, some people can't hear it. Real subwoofers are passed at 30 or 40.

I must admit I started reading through the T/s specs and was thinking "this is going to be an inefficient sub type speaker". Then I saw sensitivity of 99db and was a little surprised it was that high. My guess is the speaker just happens to have a resonant peak at 1k, the frequency at which the sensitivity is measured.... which leads into what Bill was saying about needing to see a freq response graph to see what it does in the mids and high mids. It could be quite "peaky and troughy".

Mind you $90 is quite reasonable. I'd be inclined to run some more detailed speaker modelling on this speaker and perhaps give it a try in a DIY cab. I have a feeling the ideal box size is going to be pretty large, and it's definitely going to be heavy. But both those things are subjective........

Oh and for reference, the 15" looks Ok but the 10" is total junk judging by the T/s specs.

Check the specs on Bag End speakers (made by Eminence), I think you'll find that their parameters outshine these by far. Also, Meyer speakers, but they are expensive.
