Warped Tour and Orange Amps

Sign in to disble this ad
So I was surprised this year at Warped Tour to see so many backlines with Orange amps. I'd have to say that Orange was the most popular brand of guitar amp of the day (I saw practically no Marshalls, some Mesas, and some Krank), and I'd say for every 3 Ampeg rigs, there was 1 Orange bass rig.

Now, I only really paid attention to the more punk oriented side of the tour (which was sadly the minority) and not so much the metal/pop bands, but it seemed to me that Orange had a great punk sound, dare I say better than the mighty Ampeg Fridge. The coolest bass tone I heard all day was Dan from Alkaline Trio, he had an Orange amp with two 410s and an SVT as back up.

When did Orange become so popular? I never see them anywhere in the shops that I go to, so I can't speak for their sound, but is it the look of the amps? Just something to toss around, don't wanna start any sort of brand x vs brand y wars.

i was just about to post a topic saying this! he had the best bass tone of the entire place, the only one that actually had tone - everybody else was just subs playing >100 frequencies.

Of the bands i saw, pretty much every one was using krank or ampeg, i thought it was unique that he had orange and it showed in his sound quality.

I'm a GK fan, but hearing his tone really made me want to try an Orange. It had just the right amount of distortion, warm, and punch and I was close enough to see that his EQ was practically flat.

EDIT: I also noticed he was using the Avalon DI, but his front of house sound wasn't too different from his stage volume sound from the amp, at least I didn't think so.

I love Orange. The youtube demos of the AD200b impressed me despite the poor sound of the video/recording.

I think Orange became so popular when they started giving everyone amps to use in high profile places. Now when you buy an Orange, you are paying for the ones you've seen in festival backlines.

I went a couple Sundays ago to the Hartford, CT one. I was a little more focused on the "metal" side of the spectrum (Whitechapel, Parkway Drive-best band on the bill BTW, Andrew W.K. and every TBers favorite, Enter Shikari) and noticed that all the bassists were sporting SVT 810s with various hybrid or solid state heads.

Maybe he was running a line from the tube head into the Speaker input of the Avalon so he was getting the overdrive and tube sound to FOH as well...

You aren't the only one noticing that ...

During summer I saw quite a few hardcore bands with a lot of Orange Gear.
Not only bass players, but also a lot of guitar amps and cabs (the whole back line of Converge was Orange).

And if you can try an Orange AD200, just do it ... they have the sound to match their looks. Only downside, prices are steep on your side of the ocean
