Weird volume knob problems

Sign in to disble this ad
Alright, here we go..

I own a Gallien Krueger 700RBII. I bought it used (the guy wanted to go back to ampeg SVTs). When I first jammed with it through my Ampeg 410he with a couple friends it sounded great, however, as months went on, I began noticing that the volume knob starting to cause problems.

Whenever I turn the volume knob, no matter how little or how much, the volume cranks itself to max levels for a few minuites, and then goes back to the level that it was set for. To avoid this problem, I've just been compensating for the volume surges on the amp by just adjusting my instruments volume during these surges.

The surges only happen for a few mins after I turn the volume knob on the head, then go back to perfect levels and stay that way for the duration of my playing the amp, untill I for some reason adjust the volume again.

If you guys know a simple fix for this problem, let me know, however, if this ends up being some crazy electrical mystery, if you have any idea, what would it come to to bring it in to a GK retailer closest to me (long and mcquade) to get the problem solved.

Thanks for your help!

Either that or just replace the whole pot. Could have been worse.

The pot could even be dirty and just require a proper cleanning.

OMFGMULTIMETERTIMELOL!

I agree with the above posts, though I'd clean the pot first with contact cleaner (after testing it with a multimeter,) touch up the lug connectors with a soldering iron and some .032" rosin core solder, and then replace it if nothing else helped.

Exactly what I thought when reading the OP Though it could also be a crack in the element too in which case the pot should be replaced.
