What amp for a beginner?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi. I'm really a guitar player but I decided to get a bass so it gives me more options when a lot of people show up to jam with guitars. After messing around with a lot of basses at the store I decided on an Ibanez SR370m because I thought it sounded the best(to my ears) of the Ibanez basses I tried. I decided on Ibanez SR bases only because they seemed quite a bit easier for me to play than other basses. In any case I now need to get a bass amp. Like everything else I'm sure I'm going to get a million different answers but I thought I'd ask anyway. Soooooooo. What amp should I get? I kind of like a brighter sound (which is why I liked that particular bass). Also I'm mostly into metal but I am really impressed by the slap bass players so I might want to get into that some. I don’t want to buy rock bottom beginner equipment because I like to keep stuff for a while but I don’t need top end stuff either. Let’s say around $700 max for an amp, but I don’t need to spend that if I can get something good cheaper. Thanks in advance.

Okay, I'll start. Check out the GK MB combo's. The 210 or 212 are within your price range. Seriously good gear. Amazingly inexpensive.

Next....

I'll pile on, too...Ampeg PF500/PF210he or PF115he. Very potent little rig that sounds like Ampeg + has a great tweeter in case you want to slap really bright.

If you can hold off a bit I would. The new models come out in March/April. Which means you can either get the new one, or possibly get a nice clearance deal on the old ones.

Use your wallet as a guide, and your ears as the decision maker.

Wow, Nice call! You pegged it. I went and tried a bunch of amps out and so far the MB 212 is the one I like the best in my price range. I want to check out on some more before plunking down the cash though.
