What amp to get?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,

I've been playing bass occasionally for about a year now and I believe it's time to get a new amp. At the moment I've got a Marshall mb30. It's been okay for just practicing by myself but I can barely hear myself when I'm playing with a drummer or a guitarist.

So I'm looking for something with a bit more power I think and possibly some more options as well.

Does anyone know of any good amps out at the moment that offer a bit more than an mb30 and that I can get some great tone out of? I still relatively new to the whole amp and effects scene.

Thanks.

I myself am in a similiar situation, my amp is an 100watt Ashdown, im thinking about upgrading to an Ashdown Electric Blue EB 12-180 1 x 12 Bass Combo which has 180 Watts, not sure on the price of it but i was looking at it at a website. If you dont play many gigs and play mroe for fun and arent as serious, this is an amp that will get the job done in my opinion, because my current 100 watt amp is on border line of to quiet to hear... Hope that helps!

There are too many options to list, but essentially, look into a head with at least 300 watts, and a speaker cab at least 4x10. Used gear is always a better idea, and anything else will come down to your personal tone preferences, which you'll develop later.

We need more data to make a reasonable recommendation.

1) Budget
2) Goal (jamming / bar band / concert / what?)
3) New / used / indifferent

IMO, you'll need more than one speaker/more efficiency to get the job done.

If you put the 100w through a fEarful 15/6, you'd probably be fine, depending on the band or PA support. Or even maybe a 4x10 or 2x15.

+1 on defining your goals/budget first.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Sorry for delayed response.

With regards to been more specific about my goals with this amp I mostly just want something that can be heard with the other ppl I'm playing with (which is mostly just jamming with a drummer and guitar). I do have ambitions to play at gigs at bars/pubs (eventually).

Budget... Well I'm a student so obviously something thats good value for money and is as cheap as possible without been ridiculous.
