What amp would you get in this situation?

Hey guys, so i just upgraded my cabs to Mesa's 4x10 and a 1x18 of the Diesel series. i am now looking to upgrade my head. I currently have a Peavey Firebass, and while it's served me well, it's only 475 watts at a whopping 51 lbs. This thing is really killing my back.

I'm looking to upgrade to either a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0/9.0 or a Mesa Carbine M6/9.

Now here's my question, should i go for the 600 watt models, or the 900? Obviously, the extra headroom is nice, but the 1x18 rated at only 400 watts. I've read that the big 18s need a lot of juice, but I'm wondering if the extra 50 watts would be too much?

(Just letting you know, I don't know too much in terms of overpowering. I've read the stickies, and I'm still lost. )

Your speakers will tell you when they're overpowered - no worries there. Are they both 8 ohm cabs? If not, the Shuttles are out because they only go to 4 ohms. I would suggest either an M9 or Genz GBE 1200, but that might just be me

Given that you "upgraded" to non-matching cabinets, I'd go with something like a SWR SM 1500 so you can bi-amp the mismatched cabinets giving each their ideal frequency range.

Bi-amping is just a waste nowadays. The 4x10 will probably go as deep at the !8 and be a lot more efficient. Bi-amping takes two amps to get as loud as one.

I'd keep what you've got ...you've got heavy cabinets, what difference is the lite-weight head going to do? ... it's 2 ohm stable

Sorry, I forgot the tongue-in-cheek emoticon!

if there is one thing I have learned on this board it is that bi-amping is not necessary and that the typical 4-10/1-15 (18) is a waste, too, better it should be something like 4-10/4-10 or 1-15/1-15, etc. (okay, that is two things I learned! )

You've got a 96lb 4x10 and a 72lb 1x15. If you're going to drop the extra cash to go lightweight, keep that in mind. With that in mind how about....

BBE BMAX preamp (weight = nonexistant)
http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....ier?sku=488800

Crown XLS 602D power amp (weight = 29lbs and gives you 600w per cabinet which is what they are rated for)
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com...ier?sku=481586

A shallow rack to encase it without much extra weight.

Get a DB750 and feel what glorious bass can sound like

Screw the weight. Your cabs are like rocks anyways. Sell the 18 and get another 4x10.

You'll love it.

I have to +1 the "lose the 18" comment. It's only gonna drag you down. Also gotta +1 the "why bother with a lightweight head when your cabs already weigh as much as a school bus" comment. Just get an amp you like, and pound it through the 410.

Well, the cool thing about the cabs is that the 1x18 has wheels, and I only have to lift the 4x10 like two feet to get it up there. from there on I just have to push. Sure it's "heavy" but you don't really feel it when you push.

Lifting a 50 lb head 5 and a half feet up into the air on the other hand... Not so fun. :/

Then he'd have to lift 147lbs onto his 1x18 haha.
