What Ampeg cab for this Crown?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, I scored a free crown CDi 2000 amp, which is 2000 watts bridged at 4ohms. I'll be using a sansamp vt deluxe for a preamp. Ideally I'd like an svt cab. The crown sight basically says to divide the 2000 watts by 2.5 to get the rms for the cab that you want, but that seems like they're talking about running program material through it, not a bass guitar. Anyway if they're right the 810 has rms 800 which is perfect. The 610, which I'd rather have, is at 600 which may be too low? I found another 8x10 ampeg that had an rms of 1200, and another at 1500. What do I get and still have a decent amount of headroom and plenty of power?

Thanks in advance,
marko

The Ampeg 6X10HLF is a ported cab and an 8X10e is a sealed cab, two totally different sounds. Just something to consider. If you want the Ampeg tone in a smaller size, check out the Bergantino 610. I havent played one, but lots of people prefer them over fridges these days.

..and remember, whatever any cab is rated, it's the thermal limit of the cab. The actual mechanical limits will be HALF of what it's rated. However, also remember that ANY amp can potentially blow up ANY spkr cab, no matter the ratings. It's important to use common sense and listen to your cabs for signs of straining,

Except for most Ampeg cabs, which are rated pretty legitimately.

But would 2000 watts at 4 ohms be too much for the 610, or do I just set the amps limiter and not turn it up too much?

No, you rarely if ever use all the wattage from the amp, and usually, just for brief bursts. Use your ears. If the cab is straining, back off.
