What Ampeg SVT Head and Cabinet Should I Get?

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay guys. I currently play a Fender Deluxe Active Precision Bass through an Ampeg BA-115 Combo, but it's time to get a proper SVT Stack.

Bands I Like: Pixies, Jimmy Eat World, Passion Pit, Weezer, The Clash, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Shout Out Louds, The Faint, The Early November, Animal Collective, The Cure, Death From Above 1979, The Get Up Kids, The Smiths.

Sound I Love: A real rich, big, warm tone, but while retaining just a little bit of that diggy-diggy Ernie Ball Super Slink sound.

Price Range: Trying not to cap out over $2500 for the whole head and cabinet combination.

Heads I've Tried Already Tried: Tried The SVT Classic and I loved the warm tone-- seriously, I felt like I could have sat in Guitar Center Pasadena for hours just playing around on it. Also tried The SVT 2 Pro and got a similar warm tone and even felt like I could get more tones out of it than The Classic.

Heads I've Been Told To Try: The SVT 3-Pro and The SVT 4-Pro. Though, I prefer the authentic all tube tone, and feel like I have already spoiled myself from playing on the Classic/2-Pro tube amplifiers already.

Auxilary Question Concerning Cabs: Can I play any of these heads through a 410HLF or do I need to go up to a 610?

Okay guys. Excited to get your input. 1... 2... 3... Go!

SVT-VR FTW! For the cab, 410HLF could work, and I've heard mixed reviews about the 610HLF. The 810E is definitely the one that delivers the classic SVT sound, good for a tight and big sound with a strong mid presence, but it doesn't seem to be as deep as the HLFs.

You've already answered your own question! You need an all tube SVT...be it a VR, CL, or SVTII. My preference is the VR, but I'd certainly take a CL. The 810 is absolutely the classic sound. The 410 has HUGE bottom, and the 610 is somewhat in between. They all sound great with an all tube SVT.
