Well i have decided it is time for a new setup and I'm looking towards getting a half stack. My price range is up to around 500 (having college to pay for and such) This will be my first half stack and like everyone else who ever buys anything i would like something decent. Looking around, 2 brand names have shown up, acoustic and behringer. I would like to get a 4x10 and later on add a 1x15 cab after getting a few more bucks. The reviews on both brands seem really good but after getting on talk bass to look at what was to be said about them here, I'm slightly hesitant to make my decision yet.

Here are the 2 models in particular that I am looking at:

Acoustic B200H and B410 Stack: Shop Bass & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

The behringer cab and head are sold separate

Behringer Ultrabass BB410 1200W 4x10 Bass Cabinet: Shop Bass & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

Behringer ULTRABASS BX4500H Bass Amp Head: Shop Bass & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

Are these good for a start and for the money, or would it be more beneficial to just look around and wait till something used pops up. I would prefer something soon before college starts.

In my opinion, those are two of the lowest quality rigs you can get. I'd look for something used. You can get a decent used Ampeg, GK, Markbass, SWR, Eden, etc set up in the same price range. Check out The Ampeg portaflex heads...very low priced nice sounding stuff. A new PF 500 or PF350 and a nice used cab would put you MILES ahead of Acoustic or Behringer

ime experience the 450 watt behringer at the studio sounded thicker, warmer, and louder than the acoustic, but the acoustic was only a 200 watt 210 and it may have been screwed up from being played at full volume by people who need a louder amp at the studio

cheezewiz is right, if you're on a budget you can't go wrong with higher end used gear

Reminds me, I loaned my old G-K 800RB to a friend who bought a Buttringer against my advise. I need to get that back.

If I had $500.00 to spend, based upon my limited knowledge of things other than Ampeg, I'd find an old Peavey TX410(?), and the biggest GK head I could find and stay within budget. Preferably a 700RBII, or an 800RB.

And based upon my limited experience with Behringer (or however you spell it), RUN AWAY!!! Seriously, run far, far away. Some folks have good things to say about them, but I've never played through anything by them that impressed me at all. And I'm easily impressed, btw.

Unfortunately, Acoustic seems to be a new name for low end GC amps these days. Lots of cheap amps can sound good on the showroom or in the bedroom, but keeping up with a drummer sends them straight to fartsville...
