what to buy...

Currently i'm playing on a marshall jcm800 bass series with a fender bassman 4x12 (you know, the 70's diamond-shaped one). That combination sounded perfect for my previous band (garage/rock).
I started in another band now and i'd like to make some changes to my sound. This band is more punkrock/hardcore orientated (like Ignite, Good Riddance, Rise Against, ..).
The fender cab really needs replacing, sounds flappy, unpronounced, hard to transport, ..

So here's my questions:
- stick with the marshall or sell it?
- if i sell it, what would you recommend?
- what cab should i get? i think a 410 should do the job, right?

Before anyone tells me to get an ampeg svt classic head or some mesa stuff: that will be too expensive for me :-)

btw: i mostly play on a fender precision.

You could give a hint of your price range then. Not sure about the price value of that Marshall, but it feels you me that you could get a hybrid Ampeg for it for example. Can you afford to buy a second hand SVT3Pro or SVT4Pro?

You have the right bass for the style you will be playing, that is a good thing. As for amps, there are very many options out there and:
1) reasonable suggestions can be made if you restrict a price range
2) you need to try out which amps sound good to you

As for cabinet, seems like you need a 4x10" (or vertical 2x10" stack, search this forum for this keyword if you want to learn about the pros and cons of that over a 4x10").

The money i can spend is whatever i get from selling stuff + 400 euro.
So if i just sell my cab for let's say 300 euro i can spend 700 on a new cab.
I've seen the marshall being sold on ebay for prices between 1000 and 2000 euro. If i get lucky and sell it for 2000, i can buy whatever i want of course.

It's a really good amp (and rare so i'm a bit reluctanct to sell it) but it's really really loud. Band practice (with two guitars using big mesas) is with the marshall at 1, to give you an idea.
And you know, a tube amp at 1 just doesn't give that beautiful sound he sould give.

I'd start with a better, newer cab, and see how it goes from there. Your bass cab is at the top of the list, concerning your sound, and bass speaker design has come a looong way since that Fender cab. Try out something more modern with your Marshall head. Might be all you need.

You can't beat the quality/price ratio. Their BRX cabs are simply... amazing. I can't imagine you not finding something there for your price range.

Have you thought of a Ampeg SVT series 410 or 810.. I use the SVT810 and a GK1001RB and its all I need for my nu metal band for the past 10 years. You can always add a bbe later help define your sound. The cab on CL usually costs round 600-800.00. This same head on CL costs 400-700.00. Just an idea so good luck!

I love my Carvin bass, but I've shyed away from the amps and cabs because I can't hear them before buying. How would you describe the tone of the Carvin BRX (tuned for low frequencies, mids, etc?)

Also When they were selling the red head series amps I heard stories of those amps cutting out in the middle of a show.

Red head was a few moons ago. The BRX cab is a monster. It is loud, proud, yet very refined and clean. The construction is top notch and the sound is better than it's construction. I tune to Drop C and compete w/ 2 full stacks.... no problems in the mix with head room to spare. (BX1500) They have an awesome return policy, 10 days no questions asked. Order what you want and beat the crap out of it for a weekend and see if it is what you want. You can't argue with the price and quality.

I've had great results in the situations you are looking at using my Marshall 810.

I have to agree with trying a new cab first.

Actually saw Zoli from Ignite the other week as he's fronting Pennywise right now , sound bloke!
