What cab for an Ampeg SVT3 PRO head??

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, guys! I am new on TB and just recently got this new amp off eBay.
Now I want to buy a cab for this head. I am looking at these 3 little babies :
a new Ampeg SVT 810E,
a new Ashdown ABM 810 evo III,
and a used SWR Megoliath.
I play 5 strings in a hardcore/garage punk band with some distortion. I dont know which one fits the best for my style and amp. Every suggestions helps. Thank you!

I'd choose 810E.
It's The Cab for Ampeg heads IMO. Stunning mids, sweet, sweet sounds!
It's a classic not without a reason.

Congratulations on your new head! As long as you are at a 4 Ohm load you will be getting the most out of it. Each of those cabs is 4 Ohms so you are good there. If there is anyway you can try before you buy you will be better off for it, as only you can prevent forest fires ... I mean can decide which of those 810s will get you where you want to be tonally. Used generally saves money, however, I have no idea what your financial situation is like so don't think that should be deciding factor. Whatever you choose, I hope you are happy with your new rig! Cheers.

P.S. If you mean will it reproduce a low B fundamental the answer is no, it only goes down to 40 Hz at -10dB, please have a look at greenboy or BFM fEarful designed cabs, you will save money and will get that big bottom ... Also, so you know, low frequencies always require more power to produce than higher ones, the sensitivity of a cab (or more drivers without going below 4 Ohms) are the only things that can really help out in regards to making a louder sound with a set amount of power. If you are prepared to drop $1000 on an Ampeg 810E, look into building a 1515/66 or 2 8 Ohm 15/6 cabs. This is what you are after IMHO. Cheers.

What do you mean by that? The sealed cab will sound great in the mix, but no you wont get super low bedroom tones. That all goes to mud anyways.

Of course. We hear those low notes way more from the second harmonic anyway. I've used an 810e with 5-string many times and it always sounds fat.

I play BF#BE in a band and I've got a 810EN cab and it perfectly handles the low B.

Really it depends on what you like my man. In my opinion those cabs are all tonally different. I have only played the Ashdown so my 2 cents don't amount to much there. I did have an abm500 for years though. I own/owned the other two. Both are great. I do like the ampeg more. Im still juicing on my new fender pro 810 though. Ported like the SWR but its a rip off of the ampeg. Just try a bunch out and please don't buy stuff just cause your idles play them... Now that i have told you the appropriate response. Ampeg on top of Ampeg.... Never goes wrong... Just make sure you don't buy one of the crumby particular board ones you see pop up used for $300 bucks every now and than from years past.

depending on the room you're in and the tones of the guitars you're playing with, making the fundamental of that low B might make the overall mix of your band go muddy. That's part of why folks call the 810e as having such a "tight" bottom end, is because it tends to avoid that mud, especially in a guitar heavy mix.

810e is my vote.

Ok, thx guys! I think I will try the Ampeg first (and probably only). The other 2 were just (not much, but) cheaper than this one.
