What cab to buy??``

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm using a Genz-Benz shuttle 6.0 into a Brickhouse 1x12 cab rated at 300 watts at 8ohms. I want to pick up a 2nd cab to go with it and I'm trying to figure out which way to go. I know I need another 8 ohm cab rated at 300 watts or so. I play rock, covers, no metal or slapping. I'd like a little more low end, but also a little more punch. I play an American Jazz Bass with GHS Boomers.

Should I get another 1x12? a 2x10? or a 1x15? I'm looking for something relatively inexpensive, probably used.

another identical 112 is the safest bet.

+1 two of the same always equal MORE than the sum of it's parts. Plus, with a matched pair, you gain low end, volume, and headroom. It's a guaranteed win.

I don't think an identical cabinet is possible. My cab is a project cab with a replacement speaker in it. It sounds great, but it would be costly to purchase another identical cab and replace the speaker in it.

In lieu of an identical match cab, which probably won't happen... would I be better off getting another 1x12 over the 2x10 or 1x15?

Just a couple of thoughts:

When pairing up a second non-matched cabinet to something that was a project with replacement driver is to verify that the polarity is correct between the two cabinets. It could be a crapshoot on a project cabinet or with any replacement driver if standards were not followed (either wiring or driver magnetization). The result will be a lack of low end definition (and level) if the polarity is reversed on one of the drivers.

Where possible, the results of two identical cabinets will (generally) be more predictable, more uniform and with better low end extension. As an alternative solution, sell your existing project cabinet and but something designed to work together... either 2 identical 112 (8 ohm) boxes or a single 212 (4 ohm) box. I think you will be happier in the long run.
