What Cab For A JBL D140?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was offered a JBL D140. They are rated I believe no more than 100 watts at 8ohms so really the only amp I'd run with this is my 50 watt Bassman.

What box would be ideal? I don't want to spend a ton. I'd probably look locally for someone with a blown cab.

Sealed or Ported is my biggest question.

4.5 cu ft, 2 x 4" ports, 6" long. JBL Cabaret 4625b cab... Works great. Not small but a great fit for that speaker.

So it looks like ported is the way to go.

The bigger the better. That will cause me to bring the cab out less and risk doing something stupid!

Here she is boys.

A Hartke XL 115 cab Dimensions: 24"(H) X 24"(W) X 15"(D)
Seem like it'd be a decent match? My only question is the Hartke has what's called a "vent" looks like an inch high and the width of the cab at the bottom? Will that cover my porting needs?

My local shop offered me an excellent deal on one.

A 70s Ampeg B-15 cabinet works well with the D140F/K140, if you can find the plans for one.

I don't have a Hartke XL115 handy, but it sounds like it's probably pretty close to the old Sunn Sonic I-40 cab, which is a very tasty cab with a D140 in it.
Will the shop let you try it out for a day or so to see how it works for you?

Here's what I've used for the last 25 years.

These cabs are everywhere. If you don't want to make one you could easily find one somewhere.
I have a speaker exactly like that in one.

yeah, it would sound great in a TL606 cab. i also loved them in the showman cabs that had the tone ring.

Thanks for the info! I don't think I'd have any trouble selling the Hartke cab if it didn't work out.

JohnK or anyone else. Can someone explain to me what the Tone Ring is/was? I've read about it, but don't know what it is.

it had a dual baffle where the speaker mounted to a ring and the port was 360 degrees around the speaker. the back panel was also reinforced so it wouldn't vibrate/resonate.

John thanks for the pictures, makes sense now! Makes me wonder if I shouldn't wait and try to track down a matching cab.
