What to do with my botched Acoustic 6x10...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all, i have a (very) used Acoustic 6x10. I paid $50 for it and right now it's pretty much functioning as a 3.5x10... 2 speakers are blown, and 1 is missing a dust cover and is really scratchy...

Is it 'better' to replace the three bad speakers, or do i need to replace all 6?

In regards to replacements, what are good-but-cheap options? I've never replaced 10's before... but my 15 replacement was $80... i hope the 10's aren't as expensive...

Sealed or ported? Sealed, go for Jensen Mod 10s, full set. If the old drivers are original, someone in a similar position might pay good money for them.

If the cabinet is a newer Acoustic product contact GC for replacement drivers. An original Acoustic you might have to do some work to find drivers suitable for your enclosure. BTW $80 for a fifteen is a cheap speaker. Decent 10s are going to be $50 and up per driver.

It's an old Acoustic cab... i want to say 80's, but it could very well be from the 70s. I can't tell, the info plate on the back has been worn down with time, i actually just recently found out it was an Acoustic and not a Peavey, like i first thought.

It's a sealed cab.

$40 Jensen Mod 10's as recomended above have gotten good reviews in Ampeg 8x10 sealed cabs around here from respected members. You would have either a 5.3 or 2.7ohm cabinet.

Hmmm... i'm not really 'in the know' when it comes to Ohms and what-not... would those ratings be if i replaced all 6 or just the 3?

Probably better off with total replacement. Go with 6 32 ohm 10's and run them all in parallell for 5.3 ohms. Mod 10's are probably as good or better than what came in it. Obviously choose the bass version.

I wouldn't do that. I'm not sure what the answer is becuase I don't know what your cab is currently, but mixing and matching random drivers and imedances aren't so good. Efficiencies, power handling and sensitivity are one thing, but impedance is taking it a step further.

Unless you can locate the original driver, it makes mroe seonse to replace them all.

If you know what is in there, it may be easier to decide. If it'sa 4 ohm cab, it's probably either 24 ohm speakers or a bad design that gives the top 2 drivers double power...

UNtil we know what IS going on in there, wiring and drive-wise it's hard to do anything besides recommend to replace them all and rewire. Might as well put foam on the interior walls as well.

In an older cabinet it would be probably best to replace all six. For 8Ω drivers wire each pair in series and then all the pairs in parallel. That'll give you 5.3Ω. If your cabinet is about three-quarter the size of the Ampeg 8x10 you might be able to use replacement 32Ω drivers for the 8x10. These should all be wired in parallel for the same 5.3Ω. Make sure you wire all the speakers in phase.
