what to do with my small graveyard???

Sign in to disble this ad
horrible experience last weekend . . .

went for a few out of town shows and didn't want to bring my 610 (ampeg), so i thought i'd bring just my 210 (ampeg BXT) since none of the venues sounded huge and trusting that there would be legitimate FOH sound. and of course first night in Tempe, AZ and these guys have a decent sized room with a bunch of mains but no subs and no real power amps. so i end up pushing that sweet little 210 (with my GK 1001RB) into oblivion and blow one of the horns (the fancy one with the little embedded HF driver) . . . so sad. i love this little cab it's been great over the last 4 yrs or so. so what do i do with this thing??? will it be cheap or easy to drop another 10 in there? will the wiring be complex since that was a pretty unique speaker that got killed? i'm not really interested in doing any major surgery myself although i do have rudimentary soldering skills if it's really simple. just not sure where to go with this one, and it's got me thinking . . .

I also have my old old crate 215 cab sitting in the garage since one of the drivers was blown like 10yrs ago, and i also have my old GK400 head which (about 6 yrs ago) started putting out nothing but crackling distortion and i never diagnosed the problem since i had already stepped into a new head. so this has me thinking, are there many people out there who want to buy damaged amp stuff for repair, and if so, how much can i expect to get out of this stuff?? i'm clearly most interested in repair on my 210, but if this is going to be pricey or terribly complicated, i'd rather just get some $$ out of it (if possible) to try and put toward a new small cab or combo.

any input is well appreciated.

I'd inquire about getting your speaker for the BXT reconed. Since it's discontinued, it'll be hard to find the exact replacement, but it could possibly be reconed.

No idea. Check Speaker Repair Official Site - Parts & Service - Orange County Speaker , though. They list their usual prices so it should give you a ballpark.

nice, the site says $50 for 10" ampeg speaker repair under the reconing section. altough, i wonder if it would be different for this one since it's kind of a specialized speaker with that other driver embedded like that?? if i can find someone in my area that would do a repair for that price . . . done and done!

You can sell the stuff but probably not for very much. It may be picked up by someone who likes to tinker, or maybe has the same stuff with different problems, kinda make one good one out of 2 bad ones.

Go through the stuff first and make sure it indeed has real problems. I've got stuff cheap before that people thought was broken and just turned out has loose connections, dirty pots or broken fuse holder. Stuff you can take care of yourself for a few dollars.

good thought, i think i'll try and fix the ampeg, try and get a few bucks from someone on CL for the crate, and try and run a little more of an in-depth diagnostic on the old GK. who knows, maybe whoever i find to fix the ampeg would be willing to pay a few bucks for my old POS crate!!!

I'd never even think about using a single 2x10 for a gig of any size. I know from experience that you never can tell what's going to happen at a gig. You should always consider a worst case scenario when playing a venue you've not played before. Any thing else is simply not professional.

You may be able to get the co-ax driver re-coned but, unless the proper cone kit is available, the driver will never be the same.

If you can't fix the GK and want to get rid of it, let me know!

@ paul. buddy, you are just a beam of sunlight huh?, no doubt man. i'd played a few smaller to mid size rooms with that 210 with no problems at all. guess i had a false sense of security because of previous competent sytems and soundguys. if you're really only using the cab for stage sound it shouldn't be a problem, especially if you can get maybe just a bit of support in the back monitor for drummy. (IME of course) maybe because i only ever did it with that BXT-- not a straight forward simple 210 at all, which seemed to get a really full range with plenty of lows and get plenty loud too. but this is exactly why i almost always roll with the SVT 610, just with the out of town shows that had no backlines provided i thought i could make do. yep, screwed myself on that one.

although i do plan on talking to the leader of that project about getting the cost of fixing that thing recouped out of band budget.

@ jaja, i'll let you know what i find out tinkering with that old 400rb.
