What to do? new quad box or upgrade current box?

Sign in to disble this ad
Howdy,
Im currently running a Hartke 5500 (500w head) with a Peavey 4x10 350w rms box(4 ohm) and Schector 4 string.
Im no genius bassist, just a jammer and full time covers band whore. We just are a loud rock n roll band.

I find the current box just cant quite cut it, i need just that bit more out of it but it just seems to distort rather than get louder.

Plan is after this quadbox upgrade, get the only bass ive ever played n loved the punchy but ballsy sound, warwick thumb. So thats the kind of sound im into.

So, im thinking do I just put better speakers in this box or do I just buy another box?

Any suggestions?
Cheers
Andy

Better drivers may help, but 'better' doesn't mean 'more watts'. What matters is frequency response, sensitivity and excursion. Only if you know the T/S specs and have SPL charts for the drivers you have is it possible to find out whether you can improve on them or not. Otherwise your best option is to take your rig to a music store with a decent inventory and comparison shop, perhaps getting a trade-in on your old cab towards a new one.

the drivers are magnet + papercones.
The info on it are only "200W / 16 ohms " or something similar.

Tons of people use them, if the T-S Parameters are suitable for your box, I don't see why not. However, you should note that they are rising in price recently.

As I've heard a million times on this site, don't just put any speakers into your cab. But definitely if you can find the right ones, it will be cheaper than buying a whole new cab usually. You could always sell your old cab to buy a new one though. You could come out with about equal price.
