What EV speaker is this? (Sunn 215S)

Sign in to disble this ad
I just aquired an early 70's Sunn 215S.

Speakers have both been replaced. The bottom one is clearly marked as an EV 15DLX, but the top one is not marked, and weighs MUCH LESS than the 15DLX... maybe 30% less.

Basket has that same EV look... but I have no idea what speaker this is.

I want to get 100% matching speakers for the cab, but don't know if I should find another 15DLX, or another one of these mystery drivers. I'm thinking its an EV 15B or 15L?

The surround is kind of rust colored, and the ring gasket thingie near the screw holes appears to be actual cork if that helps identify it.

Anywhere online I can run this SN# to find out?

Here's the list of 15" EV speakers that OC Speaker recones... my guess is that it has to be something on this list?

15" EV EVS-15SF 560405000, 151919
15" EV EVS-15FR 560257001, 151834
15" EV 85607C, 151666D
15" EV Force 15
15" EV EVM15L, B - SII & Pro
15" EV SRO
15" EV SP15 (cloth edge w/o whizzer)
15" EV 815-3182
15" EV Eliminator
15" EV DL15 Series
15" EV DL15W Series
15" EV DL15X Series
15" EV SX Series
15" EV DVX3150, DVX-3150, 3150
15" EV 301583001, 301177023
15" EV EVX Series

There weren't any... I would have snapped pics when it was out.

Responders to this thread seem to think it's a EV 15B or 15L basket that could have been coned with any number of OE EV kits... but all the recone kits are for the 400W 15L.

The 15L is fine for bass, I had used those for many years with great tone.

I sent OC Speaker an email, and they were kind enough to reply with the following info:

It looks exactly like an EVM15B from the outside, but it's possible it could have a slightly different voice coil. The only way for me to know for sure which one it is is to see the voice coil. But I would give you a 90% guess that it's a 15B. If you needed it reconed, we could recone it as a 15B regardless of what it is now.

I was a product manager at EV for over 13 years and I can tell you that the speaker in question is an OEM variant of the EVMs that EV produced and sold to companies like Mesa, Ampeg and others. It isn't as old as the Sunn cabinet is.
I also agree that the surround color is questionable. The frame and magnet are definitely EV - but the cone and voice coil don't look right.

The last 4 digits of the number stamped on the back of the magnet are a date code. If memory serves me correctly, it would have been made in June 1988 (the 26th week of 1988).

This is tremendously helpful... thank you. Because now I know I have a true "mystery" speaker... something I will not be likely to find an exact match for on eBay. Better to recone it as a 15B/15L so I know *exactly* what I'm dealing with.

Talkbass is just awesome sometimes.

having owned quite a few of both 15B's and 15L's, i prefer the 15L over the 15B for bass.

Thanks John. This is what I've heard.

I've heard this same cab with EV15Ls in it, and it was amazing.

Strange recone..............

Definitely NOT a 15L cone. Almost looks like a Cerwin Vega cone kit.

A long time ago I ran two 1x15 Kroth cubes loaded with 15-B's and could never get the clarity I wanted for my fretless P'.

THE 815 0651 SPEAKER

That speaker comes out of a EV TL606AX 400 WATT SUB
I just picked up 2 of them.
