What a find!!

Sign in to disble this ad
So Sunday I'm driving through the beach area of Pacific Beach in San Diego cruising along, soaking in the sun and listening to some great tunes when I decided to stop at a music store I haven't been to in a while.

I go to the back, being a small store there isn't much room but furthest away from the door sit amps and guitars/basses hung on a wall. I look around to see if they have anything interesting and low and behold hidden behind another bass amp, who is peaking out waiting to be discovered... All I saw was "rtha" and I knew I was supposed to be there.

Quickly the move the amp and there she is, an SWR Son of Bertha, a cab I've always wanted. I turned around, ask the guy how much it was. He moved the head from top of it and it was 200 dollars. "I'll take it!!" I plugged into a random head, loud enough to power the cab though and tested it out. Everything was perfect condition and so was the exterior and grille too.

I was so amazed that but at the same time aware, this find, for me at least, was in a local small mom and pop shop for this price.

The guy said it was a xmas sale and the only thing sold was the head, SWR 350X for 200 too, he said it was the guys son and his son didn't want to play anymore. Ok, ones man's trash is another man's gold. I brought it home, plugged into my SWR 350 and added my LDS 2x8 on top of it. It looks kick ass!! I didn't hook up the LDS since it's 4 ohms and the SOB is 8 ohms.
Playing my basses through it was great. I live in a small place and it's difficult to turn up but still it was a great find.

I'm thinking of changing the speakers out to 16 ohms so I can get a 8 ohm load and have it as a nice stack. What do you guys think? Is this something rare or more common than i think, 8" and 15" paired, both with horns too.

I have also been looking at 2x10 options as well.

Nice! I'd pick up a used SWR 210 - makes for a nice mini stack. I've used a 115 and 210 for years and it's a good combo.

Don't change the speakers; it will almost certainly not sound the same. Could easily be worse.

I spoke with Don, from Low Down Sound, he said he would send me the same speakers just different resistance (16 ohms x 2) for an 8 ohm load. so I can pair it up with different cabs if I want to.

My amp can handle 2 ohms but I want to be safe and run 4 ohms.

So - let me get this straight - you find a cab you've wanted for a long time - and it looks great and sounds good - and you want to change the speakers?

Ordinarily I'd say you're outa yer freakin' mind. But IF you can get the correct factory speakers, then it makes some sense.

I don't see why you need to do that if your amp is good to 2 ohms. Not only can you stack the cab, but the amp will deliver more power at 2 ohms. OTOH, if you plan on changing amps in the future and the new one won't handle 2 ohms, then there would be a reason to make the change.

I want to change the speakers on the LDS only, the impedance does not match. LDS=4ohms SWR=8ohms.

I guess I wasn't clear, that's my bad.

well I,,,

run a 4 ohm & a 8 ohm cab with my 2 ohm capable amps many times. Works real well with Eden 210 (8ohm) + 410 (4ohm), often use a GenzBenz 112 (8ohm) + 212 ( 4 ohm ).

Also, I had the SOB cab some years ago, bought it new with a Goliath III 410 at GC. But the 410 worked so nice alone, I rarely used the 115 cab with it. Try the cabs as is to see if it works for you, it might.
