What Happened to the Walkabout?

Sign in to disble this ad
Several months ago I was researching new bass heads. At that time if anyone mentioned the words LIGHTWEIGHT or TUBES in the same sentence the response was almost always Mesa Walkabout. But now with the TC RH line, and the GK MB Fusion, and the GB Streamliner out I feel like the WA gets overlooked a little. Are these new heads really better or is it because they are new and have a lot more attention on them that they are getting mentioned more often? I realize the newer heads have more power than the WA (with the exception of the TC, but I won't get into that). Is this the deciding factor for why these heads get suggested more often or do they really sound more "tube-like"?

As a former Walkabout owner, it was the only game in town for quite a while. I would not say the more recent, lighter weight, higher powered offerings are 'better', but are just as good in their own way.

Every amp sounds different, including every all tube amp. It is nice to have some different takes on the infinite variety of 'all tube' type tones in these various recent products

The Walkabout is still amazing if you like Mesa's take on 'all tube tone emulation' and don't need massive volume or headroom.

Those other heads are newer, so they get more attention.

Bingo and Bingo. The walkabout is still a fantastic head! I have owned the others mentioned and I have owned multiple Walkabouts...they are all great in their own ways.

I think the walkabout also costs a few hundred more than the others listed...
