What head?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been playing 30+ years and over the past 20 years have only used GK 800rb, Its time to get a new head just cant decide! When i go to different shops i cant always plug them into Two 4x10Svt or 8x10 Svt These are the Cabs i currently own. I need plenty of power! I play mostly 80 punk stuff. Clash, Ramones ect. So give me your Ampeg, Mesa, G.K or anyother Suggestions....

Peavey VB-2. A conservatively rated 225 watt all tube head. You have the cabs to really let it sing. If thats not enough VB-3. 300 watts of all tube head (the price point on this is why I first suggest the VB-2). If that still isnt enough, and you really need to make everyone hate you for how loud you are, the Peavey Classic 400 is out there. 400 watts of all tube, can cause internal bleeding at a distance, make your drummer and guitards cry, power.

I suggest buying a head or two from the stores or online and bring them home to try it out with YOUR gear. It's the only way you will figure out what works for you.

Make a choice on the type of sound you want - tube heads generally sound growlier as you turn them up. Hybrid heads typically have tube warmth with lots of clean style tones. Solid state heads are usually all clean tones. GK heads are growly when you want them to be. And so on.

You might want to look at tube heads based on your background.

Go audition the Traynor YBA 300 ? Also, the prices for used Ampeg SVT VR 's is coming down nicely? Keep your GK 800 RB and try out all the aforementioned tube amps.

What do you feel like your missing with the 800rb? If it's just wore out, but you love it...the GK 1001rb is awesome...maybe a GK 500 Fusion? Does it need to be light? Solid State (like your GK) or you wanna try tubes? Got a budget cap? Lots of great amps out there these days, so you're in luck!

To me, buying an amp is alot like buying a pair of shoes. You need to try them on first.
