What I found in my "new" Ampeg BA115

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Tb'ers, I'm just starting to play again after a ten year hiatus, and having 3 kids I'm on a tight budget with any gear I buy, so I find a used Ampeg BA115 in my price range at a Guitar Center in CA. I buy it sight unseen. It gets here today, I plug it in, and wouldn't you know it there is a VERY audible buzz coming from somewhere in the amp. I figure you get what you pay for, right? So I am moving the amp, and I hear something rattling around inside of it, take the bass ports off in back, and what do I find? About 3/4 of a cup of dry dog food. I remove the dog food, and the amp sounds like brand new. Go figure.

I included a picture of my "new" rig. $150 for the Peavey Grind 4, and $270 for the Ampeg. It may not be top of the line, but it's mine, and I love it.

Dry dog food is the key to the Ampeg sound and a closely guarded secret. I could tell you what they put in the sealed 8x10 cabs to make them sound so good but then I would have to kill you.

What kind of dog food is it? It is not everyday that You buy a new amp and a free lunch comes with it. They could've thought to include a soda to wash it down with.

BTW: Congrats on the new rig! Enjoy!

Yeah, but who really likes warm soda? Pitching in $1.50 in loose coins for the soda machine would have been an acceptable alternative.

That's how you get that signature Ampeg growl, right?

be thankful it was pre-eaten dog food, and not post-digested dog food

semi-related

One of my cats used to climb inside a 2x10 cab, pull a chunk of insulation out & EAT IT. No kidding, she eats lint & other fuzzy carpet debris. Freak.

I'm surprised nobody asked yet but do you have a dog?

Maybe get one if you don't.

Back in the day, one could sometimes find a good surprise in the back of an amp (and it wouldn't rattle)

Usually that's a sign that the old owner had a mouse problem @ home. The little guys love to steal dry dog food & hide it for later.

Imagine a mouse being in there when you crank it up.

Is kibble used by Ampeg to extract the best possible sound from a "woofer?"

Then there's the old story of the guy bought a used Twin Reverb (or whatever) and found a lid of pot stashed in the back.

Which is why some guys use screening inside their cab ports...especially if they store their cabs in a garage or similar location.

WHO IS IT??? That's MY Twin that got stolen from a rehearsal complex in 1992! Homeowners insurance refused to cover the pot. Forget the amp...I just want my weed back.
