What kind of amp should I get?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm just picking up bass now and don't need a behemoth as I won't be doing gigs, at least at this point. Also looking to not break the bank (poor college student, you know the deal). Any recommendations? Thanks!

Maybe check your local Craigslist and see what cheap combo amp is there and for sale. Also, here on TB there are truckloads of amps on sale. Some sort of small combo amp might be a good place to start. I played a GK 115 combo recently and thought it sounded pretty good.

a little searching on this site will reveal many excellent choices, I'd start looking in the AMP forum stickies. Much will depend on budget, what kind of music you like playing, and ultimately what sounds good to you. Definitely go the used route, though, for most bang for the buck and stick w/solid state, not tubes when you're beginning. Some of the best used deals are from makes like Peavey, Gallien Krueger, Ampeg, Carvin and Fender, at least off the top of my head. Good luck and welcome to bass

Yes, I agree with shsierra 1. Stick with some sort of solid state combo amp that is easy to carry and sounds good. The possibilities are endless. I would actually find one you can play first. Your preferences for tone may not be the same as others.

I appreciate that, and although I have been advised against getting a used amp, I'd assume that (at least the majority of) the users on TB wouldn't be peddling junk.

Yes, it would be very rare to have a problem with a TB user. There is nothing wrong with buying an amp used. If you use Craigslist, just try before you buy. On CL I would be more careful than I would be here.

I'd suggest the GK MB112 combo, it's cheap and light and get's great reviews.

I have the GK MB115 which is a little bigger and more expensive, but so far it's been great!

Who advised you against it?

The majority of TBers are going to be pretty straight forward and honest about what they are selling.

If you are unsure of what you are looking at, I would be careful about purchasing used entry level equipment from local stores and local people (big box stores included) as the people that used to own them were beginners as well and may not have known have to properly use or take care of said gear. Make sure you are able to try out the item to make sure it functions as it should.

With that said, I have absolutely no qualms about purchasing used gear myself, in fact I prefer it. I can't remember the last time I purchased something new.
