What kind of power strip or surge protector do you use for your live rig?

For the record, I did a search which resulted mostly in people saying power conditioners are stupid. I'm just curious what you guys keep in your gig bag to power your amp, pedals, etc.

I'm not looking for any craziness, and I don't use a rack setup... just want something reasonably well built that can survive getting knocked around a little bit in my bag. Also wanna keep the budget down, since these things have a habit of getting stolen at gigs for whatever reason. What do you personally use?

I got a pair of 6-outlet surge strips at Costco for $15 a few years back. Decent surge protection plus an LED to indicate that the protection is still working (it degrades over time and eventually will need replacement when the LED goes out) and another LED to indicate that the outlet it's plugged into has a proper ground connection.

I like the look of that metal one you posted, Bill. Long cord is a big plus, means I won't need my usual refrigerator-style extension cord I usually carry.

Yeah, I get that a lot of people wouldn't need one. I'm in a six piece band with two guitarists plus their pedals and amps, and a keyboardist running rack synths and his own amp. We run out of outlets fast. I don't always need it, but it's come in handy often. Sadly my last one went missing a few gigs back.

I was looking at one of these, mainly because it looked like a handy/portable design. But the one Bill posted is probably a lot sturdier, and the 15 ft would be nice.

I've been using a Tripp Lite surge for a while now. They are very well made and rugged. Mine works great with my Mesa M6 (which has a high current draw). I believe they make some with long cords as well.

Here's a link to the one I own: ISOBAR4ULTRA - 4 outlets, 6ft cord, 3330 joules, All-metal housing with LED's - Isobar Surge Suppressor

I use a rack-mount power strip (made by WireMold, IIRC) on the rear rails of my SKB case. It has four outlets on the inner side (facing my pre, compressor, and power amp) and two on the front (for wall warts, other stuff, etc.), along with a master switch and a 15A circuit breaker.

I use this Fellowes strip because it has wiring and ground fault indicators which is helpful for preventing noise issues from poor or incorrect wiring.

ahh, cool. that looks like what every decent club I play has up on their stages. solid little tank-like things, and they always seem to work.

Most so-called power conditioners are nothing more than glorified power strips. If you want a true power conditioner, check out the Furman Power Factor Pro.

I didn't buy it. The backline company I sometimes work with always keeps one of these in the truck if there is ever an issue. It has been brought out, but rarely.
