What to look for in a used Cab

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys.

Buying a used Fender Pro Series 2x15 and I want to know what to look for when I try it out?

What is the best way to test the cab to see if it's good shape or not so to speak.

Sorry for the maybe dumb question.

Thanx

Not a dumb question at all. Try it out at low and high volume to see if the drivers are all right. Inspect them with a bright light to make sure there are no creases in the cones. Rap on the cabinet with your knuckles all around to check for cracked areas. If it has a tweeter and attenuator, turn the attenuator up and down to make sure it's working. If no attenuator, turn up the treble on your amp and make sure the tweeter responds. Good luck, Bob

What he said.

With amps and cabs, everything should be "Objective" - that is to say, it either works or it does not. Now, some folks prefer one brand over the other - that's the whole "Subjective" bit - but if you have decided on a brand and model, 99% of your work is done. Plug it in, fire it up and see what happens. If it works, it works. If it has more than one driver, make sure they ALL work - that's about it!

+1 to what the others have said. I also recommend checking if the cabinet has termites or some other infestation that might not be too apparent at a first glance (if there is some wood dust that usually is a bad sign). If the cab is made of particle board instead of plywood id check for bumps and evidence of it getting wet and see how its holding up. Even more so if its at a pawn shop. An amp may sound alright even if it has these problems so you may think you got a good deal, but down the road it will break down or worse, get bugs into your other gear. I've had to pass on some cabs for this very reason.
