I've been DIing an Ampeg SVT-CL and I want to mic the cab instead. I was thinking of a Sennheiser 609. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
Mod if this is in the wrong place, feel free to move it.

I use an old Electro-Voice 666.
Works great for small 50-60 watt amps.
Also sounds good for my upright bass. |

because both mics have there own styles i tend to use them wisely
i usually stick my yoga em-268 condenser on my 2x8 to capture the punch and clarity
my other mic is a 90's shure realistic that my dad got when he was a rodie. real bid range so i place it on my 1x15 to fill the void and that combo sounds huge
altho sometimes i borrow my dads sm-57. good mic but id rather have the yoga |

Every time I work with another sound man, they always comment on how amazed they were at how amazing my bass sounds with that mic.

Been thinking hard about the Beta 52A. What do you more expirienced guys think about one of those, (kickdrum mic's) on a bass cab?

| | | | Whatever sounds best. anybody buying a mic for their own cabinet has the luxury of trying a few things- I've had good luck with EV 408's, RE20's, 757's, Shure 57's, 58's, KSM32's, various Neumanns, Sennheisers, you name it. Sometimes whatever's left over ends up sounding fantastic.
To a 'mic guy, ' this is the same question as 'Which cabinet suits me best?' There's no perfect answer, and nobody who doesn't hear you can help much.
If I had a desert island bass amp mic, it'd be an RE20. Not a lot of color, so it's versatile, and always ends up sounding good. Second would be a 57, strong mids, punches through in a mix and gets you what the DI doesn't do well. |

1. Beyer M88 (super detailed and big bottom)
2. Sennheiser MD421 (smooth and easy to mix)
3. EV RE20 (big round sound with good transients)
4. Shure SM7B (this mic loves the loud stuff)
Mics I've used and not liked:
1. AKG D112 (hyped in all the wrong places, like a smiley faced EQ)
2. Shure Beta 52 (flatter than the D112, but still unnatural)
3. Shure Beta 56, 57 (the presence peak in these mics suck on bass cabs)
4. Shure SM57 (yes it works in a pinch but the mic's low frequency rolloff means lots of eq at the console. It's only effective when blended with a DI)
Mics I have not used but really want to try:
1. Heil PR40 (I have yet to hear a bad thing about this mic, especially for the money)
2. Shure KSM 313/353 Ribbon Mics (I heard them on Vince Gill's guitar rig and they are beautiful. Then I found out they go down to 30Hz so I need to hear them on a bass cab) |

Direct into a purple knob Avalon 737 [clean and punchy]
Earthworks QTC1 [back off and get some hall with the cab for big sound]
Electro Voice RE20 [meh... its just a big honking dynamic mic - kinda dull but takes the edges off so sometimes useful] |

RickenBoogie, the Beta52A sounds good on a kick drum, but has one of those pesky 'pre-eq'd' patterns that makes it sound awful on bass cabs. Same goes for the Audix D6.
I used to use an MD421 a lot live, and an RE20 when recording, but now I find myself using the RE20 live and either that or an SM7B when recording.
JimmyM is a big fan of the Heil PR40, and there is a lot of hype around this mic, especially when it comes to micing bass cabinets. Sounds like it could be a winner.
The Shure KSM353 used to be called the Crowley & Tripp El Diablo. Mercenary audio raved a lot about that mic, and then Shure bought out C&T. Supposedly they kept the design the same, and from what I've heard (reviews and sound samples) it sounds great; more of a studio mic though.
